Tyler Glasnow Injury: Dodgers Starter Leaves Game Due To Low Back Pain

Tyler Glasnow exited his start for the Los Angeles Dodgers against the Houston Astros just before the second inning with low back pain.

Glasnow was making his warm-up pitches before motioning to the Dodgers dugout. He was checked on by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and a trainer before quickly deciding to come out of the game.

There was nothing obviously wrong with Glasnow on the replay, and he did not give any visual indication of what was wrong when talking with the trainer. But the Dodgers confirmed the injury was a back issue roughly 10 minutes after he left the game.

Jack Dreyer entered to pitch the second inning after Glasnow was taken out.

Prior to exiting, Glasnow allowed a solo home run in his first inning, but also struck out two hitters. The first strikeout he recorded was the 1,000th of his career, which made him the quickest pitcher to reach that mark in just 793 innings.

The right-hander has been excellent for the Dodgers this season, posting a 2.72 ERA with 49 strikeouts across 39.2 innings.

Injuries have plagued Glasnow throughout his career, and he has also previously missed time due to a back injury. Glasnow was placed on the 15-day injured list on July 9, 2024, due to lower back tightness, and he was activated on July 24.

At the time, Glasnow described it as a problem caused by his height and said it’s something he has to deal with from time to time. However, he wasn’t concerned that it was a serious issue.

Glasnow was also scratched from a start last season with back tightness, but only missed the one start and it didn’t affect him again during the year.

The larger concern is pitching through back tightness and it affecting his mechanics, which could lead to larger issues. Players often compensate for injuries when trying to play through them, and it usually ends up doing more damage than good.

Dodgers options without Tyler Glasnow

If Glasnow needs to go on the IL, the Dodgers options to replace him are limited. They could have Blake Snell end his rehab early and cotninue to build up at the MLB level, but that adds more risk to an important pitcher.

They could give Cole Irvin or Ryder Ryan a start until Snell is ready, which may be more likely. River Ryan is currently on the 7-day injured list, so he is not an option.
