The Colorado Rockies swung early and often against Rich Hill but it wasn’t until the fifth inning that they finally scratched. Pat Valaika’s wall scraper was just out of the reach of Kiké Hernandez, and Nolan Arenado and Chris Iannetta tacked on home runs of their own in a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Other than surrendering a homer that was Valaika’s first of the season, Rich Hill otherwise had a strong outing. He set a season high with 10 strikeouts over 6.2 innings and allowed six hits.
If there was something for Hill to improve on, he hit two batters, giving him five over his last two starts.
After Hill exited with two on, Scott Alexander stranded both runners. Although Alexander managed to retire DJ LeMahieu to end the seventh, he was responsible for surrendering a home run to Arenado in the eighth inning.
Iannetta tagged Yimi Garcia for the Rockies’ third solo home run of the game in the ninth.
For as well as Hill pitched, his performance was bested by fellow southpaw Tyler Anderson. He limited the Dodgers to just four hits over eight shutout innings. None of the Dodgers’ hits off Anderson went for extra bases.
Anderson began his night with four strikeouts across three perfect innings. He struck out Chris Taylor and retired Kiké Hernandez before allowing a two-out single to Justin Turner in the fourth inning.
Anderson completed his night’s work by retiring nine of the final 11 batters faced. Wade Davis allowed a two-out solo home run to Turner before converting his 23rd save of the season. The home run was the Dodgers’ 54th in June, which broke the franchise record for most in a calendar month.
Because of their loss, the Dodgers failed to gain ground on the Arizona Diamondbacks, who were defeated by the San Francisco Giants.
