The Los Angeles Dodgers lost another member of their starting rotation last week when Tony Gonsolin was placed on the 15-day injured list due to right elbow discomfort.
Gonsolin returned to the IL after missing the first 30 games of the 2025 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery and minor back trouble that stemmed from a workout late in Spring Training. Due to his previous operation, elbow discomfort caused some cause for concern with the right-hander.
Gonsolin has been shut down from throwing with the hope that a few days of rest would help alleviate some of his discomfort. He was also scheduled to have his elbow examined by a specialist to rule out a more significant injury.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts revealed the UCL in Gonsolin’s right elbow was not structurally damaged and he does not appear to be in jeopardy of needing another surgery at this time, via Bill Plunkett of the Southern California News Group:
“The UCL is intact … which is great news,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts reported of the ulnar collateral ligament which Gonsolin had repaired via Tommy John surgery in 2023. “He’s going to be down from throwing. I don’t know when that is going to be again. I think the main takeaway is the UCL is intact.”
The latest development is a positive one for the Dodgers, but it remains unclear when Gonsolin will start throwing again.
The 31-year-old went 3-2 with a 5.00 ERA and 1.42 WHIP in 36 innings across seven starts prior to landing on the IL. He struggled with his command, which led to increased walk and home run totals, especially in the first inning.
Tony Gonsolin among Dodgers pitcher injuries
Gonsolin became the 14th pitcher and eighth starter currently on the Dodgers’ injured list. Their starting rotation currently comprises of Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Dustin May, Clayton Kershaw and Justin Wrobleski.
