UPDATE (July 29, 10:55 a.m. PT): The Los Angeles Dodgers reportedly acquired Tommy Edman as part of a three-team trade with the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago White Sox that includes Miguel Vargas.
Although the Los Angeles Dodgers have a need for starting pitching at this year’s MLB trade deadline, they already cut into some of that depth last week by trading James Paxton to the Boston Red Sox after he was designated for assignment.
Paxton didn’t figure to factor into the Dodgers’ pitching plans for October, and the team needed to make room on their active and 40-man rosters for River Ryan. The right-hander became the latest Dodgers pitching prospect to make his MLB debut this season and is part of the rotation for the time being.
The Dodgers have also relied on fellow rookies Gavin Stone, Landon Knack, Kyle Hurt and Justin Wrobleski at various points this season.
That collection of young pitchers could end up proving key to the Dodgers completing a Tommy Edman trade with the St. Louis Cardinals, according to Jack Harris of the L.A. Times
The Dodgers have coveted Edman in the past, according to one person with knowledge of the situation but not authorized to speak publicly. The Dodgers also have the kind of young, controllable MLB-caliber pitching the Cardinals are believed to be seeking for Edman as well.
Hurt is scheduled to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery, but theoretically could be included as part of an Edman trade with approval by MLB commissioner Rob Manfred for an injured player. Edman is on the injured list as well but currently is completing a rehab assignment.
Meanwhile, the Dodgers may not be inclined to part with Stone, Wrobleski or Ryan as part of an Edman trade. Dustin May an Tony Gonsolin fit the description of young pitchers with MLB experience who are under team control, but neither is taking the mound this season.
Dodgers trade targets
Along with Edman, the Dodgers have been connected to the likes of Garret Crochet, Luis Robert Jr., Jack Flaherty, Tarik Skubal, Yusei Kikuchi, Blake Snell, Nico Hoerner and Luis Rengifo, among others.
