Tommy Edman Can’t ‘Get Over’ Right Ankle Soreness

The Los Angeles Dodgers made a couple of roster moves on Saturday, which included Tommy Edman being transferred to the 60-day injured list as he continues to recover from offseason right ankle surgery.

The move, which didn’t impact Edman’s projected timeline to return in late May or early June, allowed the Dodgers to add Charlie Barnes to their 40-man roster, who was claimed off waivers from the Chicago Cubs.

Edman isn’t eligible to be activated until May 24, but manager Dave Roberts recently suggested the 31-year-old’s timetable was likely already pushed back after experiencing soreness when he increased the intensity of his running.

Roberts provided an update on Saturday and said Edman has not been able to continue his program at full speed due to the lingering right ankle soreness, which could delay his return to the Dodgers.

“Tommy, I still don’t know when he’s eligible to come off, honestly, but it’s just been kind of a slow process for Tommy,” Roberts said.

“So there’s been some kind of start and stops, and not resets, but he just hasn’t been able to get over the hump of the soreness. So we’ve kind of tempered some of the workload and backed off a little bit at times.

“He’s in a good spot right now, but certainly, I think at the outset, we thought he’d be here before Kiké, but it looks the other way.”

When asked what specifically has plagued Edman’s ankle, Roberts couldn’t give a definitive answer.

“I don’t know. That’s a good question,” Roberts said. “I don’t know if it’s the running, if it’s the hitting, right versus left. I know that he’s taken some grounders here in the past few weeks. I don’t know what gets it upset. The trainers I’m sure do, but I don’t know.”

When will Tommy Edman return to Dodgers?

Based on Roberts’ latest comments, it would appear that Edman is still a ways from making his 2026 debut. The two-time World Series champion not only needs to ramp up again when the soreness subsides, but he will also have to complete a rehab assignment, considering he missed all of Spring Training.

Edman expressed a desire to return to filling a utility role and stealing more bases this year, following ankle surgery last November.
