Tommy Edman Begins Rehab Assignment With Oklahoma City Comets

3 Min Read

Tommy Edman finally began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday, which marks the start of his final steps before returning to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Edman has been out all year thus far after undergoing right ankle surgery in the offseason. His timeline has been slower than expected, as Edman had trouble getting over his ankle soreness after any baseball activities.

But Edman starting his rehab assignment means he will be back with the Dodgers within the next few weeks. Position players can only be on a rehab assignment for a maximum of 20 days, and Edman is expected to take all of the days available, setting Edman up to return in mid-June.

When Edman does return, the Dodgers will likely decide between keeping Hyeseong Kim or Alex Freeland on their roster. Freeland seems to have the upper hand at the moment, given that the Dodgers were already planning on calling him up to replace Kim before Kiké Hernández suffered his injury.

Edman was transferred to the 60-day injured list on May 9, but it did not affect his return timeline as the Dodgers remain cautious given his history with ankle issues.

Edman was on the IL when the Dodgers acquired him in 2024 due to a sprained right ankle. Upon his return three weeks later, Edman remained healthy for the rest of the season.

But they came back up during the 2025 season, forcing him onto the IL twice. He also had two other instances in which his ankle bothered him, but he avoided the IL in both cases.

That led the 31-year-old to undergo surgery in the offseason, hoping to get past these issues fully.

Tommy Edman’s first game of rehab assignment

Edman started at second base while batting second in his first game for the Comets. He ended up going 1-for-3 with a single before being replaced by Austin Gauthier after five innings.

Edman grounded out to his former teammate, Cavan Biggio, in his first at-bat.

He ended up picking up a single in his second at-bat, which loaded the bases for the Comets. However, with two outs already in the inning, the team didn’t score.

Edman again grounded out to Biggio in his third and final at-bat. All of his contact came as ground balls hit to the right side of the infield.

Edman was pinch-hit for in the top of the sixth inning to end his first rehab game.
