Dodgers Injury Updates: Max Muncy, Tommy Edman, Edwin Díaz, Tyler Glasnow

5 Min Read

The Los Angeles Dodgers activated Kiké Hernández off the 60-day injured list before Monday’s game, but still remain without several key contributors.

Among them is Max Muncy, who to this point has avoided the IL after getting hit by a pitch in the right wrist. Muncy has missed three games thus far and won’t be in the Dodgers lineup on Tuesday night either, though partly due to the Colorado Rockies starting left-hander Kyle Freeland.

Meanwhile, the likes of Edwin Díaz, Tommy Edman and Tyler Glasnow are all making notable progress in their respective recoveries.

Dodgers updates

Edwin Díaz

Díaz underwent surgery April 22 to remove loose bodies from his right elbow. He reported an immediate improvement in range of motion after they were removed from his triceps area and revealed the loose bodies had been present throughout the entirety of his career.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the plan was for Díaz to begin playing catch potentially as soon as Monday. If not, he was expected to do so Tuesday.

The Dodgers continue to anticipate Díaz returning at some point during the second half of the season.

Tommy Edman

Edman had been encountering trouble when attempting to increase the level of intensity he was running at, but seemingly cleared that hurdle last week. Now the 31-year-old is poised to join Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday for the start of a rehab assignment.

Position players are permitted to remain on a Minor League rehab assignment for a maximum of 20 days, and Roberts said Edman likely will be “maxed out” on that front.

Tyler Glasnow

Glasnow resumed playing catch from flat ground on Monday after being shut down amid lingering back discomfort. He’s been on the 15-day injured list since May 8 and is missing more time than the Dodgers first anticipated.

General manager Brandon Gomes nevertheless became the latest to downplay the notion that there should be reason for concern. But because of the amount of time Glasnow is going to spend on the injured list, Roberts said he will need a rehab assignment before returning.

Kiké Hernández

Hernández made his season debut on the first day he was back with the Dodgers, and he did so while feeling markedly healthy compared to last year.

“Every time I would get in my batting stance, I would feel like I had a blow torch on,” Hernández said while reflecting on playing through his left elbow injury.

He ultimately underwent surgery during the offseason and missed representing Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic because of it.

As Hernández recalled Monday, Dr. Neal ElAttrache said the severity of the elbow injury was the worst he’d seen in that specific case. Hernández said he called Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman to have Dr. ElAttrache repeat that, and add he needed to be re-signed for sacrificing physically.

Max Muncy

Although Muncy is on track to end up missing a minimum of four games, he did play catch on Monday while wearing a protective wrap on his right wrist.

Roberts said the swelling had already gone down. It’s not yet been decided if Muncy will undergo a CT scan on his right wrist to further support the negative results from an initial X-ray.

There was a moment during the series opener against the Rockies that Muncy tapped his wrist and was seen in the dugout with a first baseman’s glove. However, Miguel Rojas managed to remain in the game at third base despite limping at times.
