Miguel Rojas was in the running for a first career Gold Glove Award, but he was bested by Javier Sanoja of the Miami Marlins. Sanoja is among the group of first-time Gold Glove winners in 2025.
Sanoja is the Marlins’ first Gold Glove winner since Marcel Ozuna in 2017. He played every position this season except for catcher and right field.
With that, the Dodgers have never had a player win the utility Gold Glove Award. It’s still in its infancy as a utility winner has only been recognized since 2022.
The entire list of Rawlings Gold Glove Award winners for the 2025 season were announced Sunday night. Mookie Betts, the Dodgers’ only other finalist, also came up short as the St. Louis Cardinals’ Masyn Winn won the first Gold Glove of his career.
Gold Glove winners for the nine standard positions are determined through voting by MLB managers and up to six coaches from each team. Managers and coaches cannot vote for their own players and are only permitted to submit ballots for those in their same league.
Those votes amounted to 75% of the selection total, with the SABR Defensive Index accounting for the remaining 25%.
For the utility Gold Glove Award, Rawlings collaborates with SABR to create a specialized defensive formula separate from the traditional selection process.
Miguel Rojas falls short for utility player Gold Glove
Rojas was a Gold Glove finalist as a utility player, along with Sanoja and the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Jared Triolo.
Rojas played four different positions this season: second base, third base, shortstop and first base. The 36-year-old also made four pitching appearances as he allowed seven runs in five innings of work.
While Rojas was not able to add a Gold Glove Award to his career accomplishments, the announcement came less than 24 hours removed from a game-tying home run in the ninth inning of Game 7 of the World Series and becoming a two-time champion.
