On May 25, 1979, the Los Angeles Dodgers set a record for most team home runs in a single game when they slugged seven against the Cincinnati Reds.
It was a total team effort as Dusty Baker, Rick Sutcliffe, Steve Garvey, Gary Thomasson, Derrel Thomas, Joe Ferguson and Davey Lopes each contributed with a homer. The Dodgers’ offense exploded for 17 runs against the Reds, seven of which were charged to Hall of Famer Tom Seaver in the first three innings.
Home runs accounted for 10 of the Dodgers’ 17 runs in the contest, with four of the seven being solo homers.
The Dodgers put up a crooked number in half of their innings while on offense, scoring 14 runs across three separate frames.
The Dodgers organization has achieved this feat three additional times since 1979, tying the record on Aug. 22, 2016; Aug. 2, 2018; and Aug. 23, 2020.
Coincidentally, the game on Aug. 22, 2016, was also against the Reds. Five different Dodgers contributed to the total that time around, with Adrián González adding in two. Of the four aforementioned games, this was the only one to not take place at Dodger Stadium.
The game on Aug. 2, 2018, ended with the highest run total and largest run differential for the Dodgers in any of these games, a 21-5 drubbing of the Milwaukee Brewers. Again, it was five different players who contributed at least one homer, but this time Joc Pederson and Yasiel Puig each added an extra.
The game that saw the most solo homers was the one on Aug. 23, 2020, against the Colorado Rockies, with five different Dodgers making the solitary trot around the bases. This time, six different batters hit a home run off a Rockies pitcher. Mookie Betts was the only one with a multi-homer game.
Dodgers set new home run record
The Dodgers set a new record with eight homers against the Brewers on May 23, 2002, thanks in large part to Shawn Green hitting four of his own.
The Dodgers later matched that mark on Opening Day against the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2019.
