This Day In Dodgers History: Shawn Green Traded, Rick Monday Acquired

On Jan. 11, 2005, the Los Angeles Dodgers completed a trade that sent Shawn Green to the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for William Juarez, Danny Muegge, Dioner Navarro and Beltran Perez. The trade was completed eight days after MLB commissioner Bud Selig gave his approval.

Selig signing off on the trade was required due to the Dodgers sending $8 million to the Diamondbacks as part of the transaction. The deal was also contingent on Arizona and Green agreeing to an extension, which amounted to a three-year, $32 million contract.

The trade marked the end of Green’s five-year tenure with the Dodgers. Along with Jorge Nunez, he was acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for Pedro Borbon and Raul Mondesi on Nov. 8, 1999.

The Dodgers trading for Green was monumental as that also came with a new contract: six years and $84 million. Green’s average salary of $14 million per season was the second-highest in baseball at the time.

It trailed the $15 million average annual value Kevin Brown secured in his seven-year, $105 million contract with the Dodgers. Brown was MLB’s first $100 million player.

Green hit .280/.366/.510 with 183 doubles, 12 triples, 162 home runs and 509 RBI over 798 games with the Dodgers. He had several highlights during that span, which included a historic four-homer performance against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Green’s time the Diamondbacks was short-lived as he was traded to the New York Mets for Evan MacLane on Aug. 22, 2006.

Meanwhile, Juarez never advanced past Triple-A while with the Dodgers; Muegge topped out at Double-A; and Perez became a free agent after the 2005 season and went on to sign with the Washington Nationals, where he made his MLB debut the next year.

Navarro had a productive showing with the Dodgers after the trade and carried that into 2006, but was traded to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in June of that year. Navarro returned to the Dodgers organization when he signed as a free agent in December 2010, thought was released in August of 2011.

Monday joins Dodgers

Also on this day in Dodgers history — but back in 1997 — the Dodgers acquired Rick Monday in a trade that sent Jeff Albert, Bill Buckner and Ivan de Jesus to the Chicago Cubs.

Monday went on to finish his career by playing eight seasons with the Dodgers, and remains part of their broadcast team.
