This Day In Dodgers History: Franchise Record Set For Best Home Winning Streak

When the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the San Diego Padres, 7-3, on May 3, 2009, they set a franchise record for the best home winning streak to begin a season at 10 games. It broke the franchise record that was held by the 1946 Brooklyn team that won nine games in a row at Ebbets Field.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Dodgers’ streak in 2009 was the longest by any National League team since 1983, when Joe Torre’s Atlanta Braves won their first 10 games at Fulton County Stadium to tie the modern record shared by the 1918 New York Giants and 1970 Chicago Cubs.

The Dodgers improved to an MLB-leading 18-8 overall, which was their best start since 1984.

After beginning the 2009 campaign with seven road games, L.A. began their march to setting a new home record by sweeping the San Francisco Giants and Colorado Rockies. Then came a nine-game road trip before the Dodgers were back at Chavez Ravine.

Their May 3 victory over the Padres completed a four-game series sweep. L.A. accomplished as much in large part to scoring three runs in the first inning against Chad Gaudin, and piling on four in the sixth. The Dodgers led 7-1 entering the seventh inning.

Orlando Hudson went 2-for-3 with a game-high three RBI, and Juan Pierre, Andre Ethier, James Loney and Chad Billingsley had one RBI each.

On the mound, Billingsley completed seven innings for a third consecutive start. He allowed two runs on four hits, including one homer, and collected eight strikeouts. The win improved the right-hander to 6-0 on the season.

The Dodgers’ unbeaten streak at home was the longest in the Majors since 2003, when the Kansas City Royals won their first 11 games at Kauffman Stadium. The 2009 Dodgers went on to win 50 games at Dodger Stadium.

Dodgers home record

The 2019 club set a franchise record with 59 wins at Dodger Stadium.
