The Texas Rangers were awarded the 2024 MLB All-Star Game, which will be played Tuesday, July 16, at Globe Life Field. MLB commissioner Rob Manfred made the announcement at the conclusion of owners’ meetings in New York.
It marks a second time the Rangers will have hosted the All-Star Game, last doing so at The Ballpark in Arlington in 1995. The National League won that game 3-2 thanks to Jeff Conine’s go-ahead pinch-hit home run in the eighth inning.
Globe Life Field has been the Rangers’ new home since the 2020 season and already served as a host site for jewel MLB events because of challenges brought about by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic that year.
“The Rangers stepped up under difficult circumstances and Globe Life Field served as terrific host for the 2020 Postseason, including the World Series,” Manfred said in a statement. “We are excited to once again feature Baseball’s newest ballpark on a global stage next summer.”
Rangers majority owner and managing partner Ray Davis added: “The Texas Rangers are honored to be awarded the 2024 All-Star Game. With the opening of Globe Life Field in 2020 and the incredible development that continues to take place around the park, Arlington is an ideal location to host Major League Baseball and the Midsummer Classic.
“We want to thank Commissioner Rob Manfred, the State of Texas and the Governor’s Office, the Cities of Arlington and Fort Worth, and all of the dedicated officials from the Arlington Convention and Visitors Bureau and Visit Fort Worth for their efforts in bringing this showcase event to the area.”
When the Rangers hosted the 1995 All-Star Game it was during their second season at The Ballpark in Arlington.
Although Davis thanked the State of Texas and Governor’s office in his statement, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott proclaimed in 2021 that the state would never host an All-Star Game because he was upset with MLB removing the event from Atlanta.
Seattle Mariners hosting next All-Star Game
In September of last year, the Seattle Mariners were awarded the 2023 MLB All-Star Game. The Mariners are due to host a Midsummer Classic for the third time in franchise history.
They previously staged All-Star Games in 1979 (Kingdome) and 2001 (Safeco Field). The NL won the first exhibition, while the American League was victorious in the last meeting in Seattle.
