Tanner Scott has drawn interest from several teams this offseason but remains among the top available free agents with just over one month until the start of Spring Training.
The left-hander is coming off an excellent season with the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres that saw him post a combined 1.75 ERA, 2.92 FIP and 1.13 WHIP in 72 innings.
Scott has been most prominently linked to the Los Angeles Dodgers in recent weeks, who are said to want to add a high-leverage relief pitcher to their bullpen.
The New York Mets are also looking to improve their relief corps and reportedly met with Scott, via Will Sammon of The Athletic:
The New York Mets’ pursuit of bullpen reinforcements differs somewhat from how they navigated the starting pitcher market. With relievers, they’re exploring the most expensive options available, and have met (likely via phone or video) with the top remaining free-agent option, Tanner Scott, league sources said.
The Mets have been one of the most active teams this winter, most notably signing Juan Soto to a record-setting 15-year, $765 million contract. They’ve also added Clay Holmes, Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea to their starting rotation.
New York would have to make another significant commitment to sign Scott as he is reportedly seeking a four-year contract with an average annual salary of $20 million.
If signed, Scott would strengthen an already talented Mets bullpen that includes setup man José Buttó and closer Edwin Díaz.
Mets’ potentially signing Tanner Scott could be long-term play
If the Mets sign Scott, they not only would be getting one of the best left-handed relievers in the league, but also a potential game-changer in the postseason should they face the Dodgers again.
Scott held left-handed batters to a .132 batting average last season and was particularly tough against Shohei Ohtani in the 2024 National League Division Series.
