Tanner Scott Rumors: Dodgers’ Interest Potentially Impacted Padres

The Los Angeles Dodgers completed what was arguably the biggest trade on deadline day by acquiring Jack Flaherty from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for prospects Thayron Liranzo and Trey Sweeney.

The San Diego Padres, who entered the day 6.5 games behind the Dodgers in the National League West, were plenty active as well.

Two days after acquiring setup man Jason Adam from the Tampa Bay Rays, the Padres landed All-Star closer Tanner Scott in a trade with the Miami Marlins.

Scott was highly sought after, and according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Dodgers were among the finalists to trade for him before the Padres stepped up their offer:

The Padres paid a hefty price for Scott, parting with No. 2 ranked prospect Robby Snelling, Adam Mazur (No. 4), Graham Pauley (No. 5) and Jay Beshears (No. 24) in the deal. San Diego also acquired Bryan Hoeing from Miami.

The Padres have lost out to the Dodgers at the trade deadline before — particularly in 2021 when L.A. swooped in to acquire Max Scherzer and Trea Turner — and they clearly did not want that to happen again.

Scott would have been a great fit in the Dodgers bullpen, but the front office deemed his price to be too high, especially when considering he is due to become a free agent at the end of the season.

L.A. nevertheless addressed their relief corps with the acquisition of Michael Kopech as part of a three-team trade with the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago White Sox.

Dodgers trade deadline haul

In addition to trading for Flaherty and Kopech, the Dodgers acquired Kevin Kiermaier, Tommy Edman and Amed Rosario over the span of two days.
