Brandon McCarthy and Zack Greinke made their respective 2017 Spring Training debuts on Friday at Salt River Fields, with the latter enjoying more success. McCarthy completed two innings to Greinke’s 1.2 frames, though Greinke held the Dodgers without a run.
Paul Goldschmidt followed a Daniel Descalso one-out single with a home run to give the Diamondbacks a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. McCarthy tossed 21 pitches before he could get out of the inning.
Greinke was removed after allowing a two-out single to Andrew Toles in the second. He was stranded, as Diamondbacks reliever Braden Shipley got Austin Barnes to line out. Alex Verdugo and Logan Forsythe combined for back-to-back singles with one out in the third inning.
But any semblance of a rally ended when Corey Seager, appearing in a game for the first time since Monday, grounded into a double play. Edward Paredes was the first Dodgers reliever to enter the game, though his appearance was brief.
Paredes was removed after issuing three consecutive walks to load the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the third inning. Fabio Castillo was unable to stop the bleeding, allowing three straight hits — two-run single to Goldschmidt, RBI single to Jake Lamb and an RBI double to Chris Owings.
The Diamondbacks held a 7-0 lead heading into the fourth inning. After Andre Ethier was hit by a pitch, Scott Van Slyke grounded into a double play. Descalso padded the Diamondbacks’ lead with an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth.
The fifth inning was much of the same for the Dodgers. Austin Barnes was forced out after hitting a one-out single, and Verdugo popped-out to end the inning. Steve Geltz worked around an Ahmed leadoff double to complete a scoreless fifth inning.
Forsythe singled and Ethier walked, putting two on with one out in the sixth inning. Jorge De La Rosa stranded both runners by striking out Scott Van Slyke and Joc Pederson. The Dodgers scratched in the seventh inning behind Alex Verdugo’s RBI double. Chris Taylor added an RBI single, though the Diamondbacks remained in control with an 8-2 lead.
Mike Ahmed tripled in the eighth and scored one batter later on Kyle Garlick’s groundout. Jacob Rhame was knocked around in the bottom half of the inning, allowing five runs. Wilmer Font replaced Rhame but allowed a two-run homer prior to ending the eighth.
Keyvius Sampson allowed a leadoff triple but otherwise completed a scoreless ninth inning to wrap up the Diamondbacks’ 15-3 victory over the Dodgers.
