Spring Training Recap: Kiké Hernández Helps Dodgers Complete Cactus League Sweep Of Angels

Kiké Hernández hit two doubles as he helped the Los Angeles Dodgers come from behind for a 5-3 win over the Los Angeles Angeles. With that, the Dodgers extended their winning streak to six games.

Hernández’s first double of the game led off the second inning and eventually led to a run that cut the Dodgers’ deficit in half. Hernández’s second extra-base hit drove in a pair of runs and gave the Dodgers their first lead. Hernández then scored a run on Kyren Paris’ throwing error.

Sandwiched between Hernández’s two doubles was a solo home run from Eddie Rosario that had enough carry to get over the wall in right field and land just beyond the reach of Mike Trout on his attempt at a leaping catch.

The Dodgers’ offensive production helped erase what was a bumpy performance by Landon Knack in his third Cactus League game (second start) of the year.

Knack specifically struggled with putting hitters away and it proved costly over his two innings of work. Knack got ahead 0-2 against Mickey Moniak, only to surrender a leadoff home run.

Then after Austin Barnes was charged for an error because of whiffing on a pop-up to home plate, Mike Trout lined a solo homer out to right field to double the Angels’ lead.

Kevin Newman’s RBI single with two strikes and two outs in the second inning put the Angels up 3-1.

A combination of expected regulars and organizational depth that appeared out of the Dodgers’ bullpen combined to keep the Angels off the board.

Ben Casparius pitched 1.1 innings, Alex Vesia struck out two batters as part of retiring the side in order, and Anthony Banda induced a double play to face the minimum.

Casparius figures to be in position for a spot on the Dodgers’ Opening Day roster in Tokyo, given the number of injured relief pitchers that grew to include Edgardo Henriquez for an issue that manager Dave Roberts has only said occurred away from the field.

Dodgers Spring Training games against Angels

Wednesday’s game at Tempe Diablo Stadium was the final Cactus League meeting of the year between the Dodgers and Angels. The Dodgers won both contests to complete a Cactus League sweep of the Angels.

However, they still have three more Spring Training games with the exhibition Freeway Series from March 23-25.
