Spring Training Recap: Dodgers Hit 3 Home Runs Off Shohei Ohtani In Win Over Angels

The Los Angeles Dodgers took advantage of Shohei Ohtani lacking command and they continued to pummel the L.A. Angels with a power display en route to a 10-2 win in the penultimate Freeway Series game.

Ohtani walked the bases loaded in the first inning and the Dodgers took a lead on a wild pitch. After Ohtani put Will Smith on to start the second inning, Chris Taylor connected for a two-run home run. Corey Seager then extended the lead with an opposite-field homer, his eighth of the spring.

Will Smith blew the game open in the third inning with a three-run homer on what wound up being the final pitch Ohtani threw. A long mound visit concluded with the right-hander being taken out of the game in some part due to a blister issue.

Cody Bellinger added to the Dodgers’ home run total with a solo shot in the fifth inning off Junior Guerra. Miguel Vargas brought a run in on a sacrifice fly in the seventh and DJ Peters followed with an RBI infield single to put the Dodgers up 10-1.

Julio Urias got through three hitless innings before surrendering a solo homer to pinch-hitter Phil Gosselin with one out in the fourth. It was one of two hits Urias allowed over 5.2 innings. He finished with three strikeouts against zero walks, and will next take the mound Sunday against the Colorado Rockies.

Corey Knebel pitched in a game for the first time since being struck by a line drive. He retired two of three batters faced by striking them out. Kenley Jansen and Jimmy Nelson followed with more scoreless working, combining for five outs.

Scott Alexander allowed a run in the ninth inning as he remains in a competition with Dennis Santana for the final bullpen spot on the Dodgers’ Opening Day roster.

Freeway Series concludes Tuesday

The Dodgers wrap up their exhibition schedule Tuesday with the finale of the three-game Freeway Series. Dustin May, who was named the team’s fifth starter, takes the mound for his final tuneup of the spring.
