While the Los Angeles Dodgers struggled to hit in their split-squad game against the Chicago Cubs — a loss at Camelback Ranch — they had no such trouble in a 13-8 win over the San Francisco Giants at Scottsdale Stadium.
San Francisco took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Isan Díaz’s home run off Dylan Covey. That was the lone run Covey allowed despite giving up five hits over three innings. He managed to keep the damage at a minimum behind six strikeouts.
In the fourth inning, Miguel Vargas lined an infield single off Alex Cobb’s knee, which knocked the Giants starter out of the game. Luke Williams hit a three-run home run to give L.A. a lead with two outs in the inning and they never looked back.
Williams joined Freddie Freeman (three), Mookie Betts (two), Jason Heyward (two) and James Outman (two) as Dodgers with multiple homers this spring. Outman also slugged his second on Saturday.
After Steven Duggar kept the fourth inning alive with a base hit, Devin Mann’s two-run homer provided insurance. The Dodgers continued slugging in the fifth, as Vargas doubled and Duggar delivered a two-run home run against his former team.
Duggar then was part of a four-run inning for the Dodgers in the sixth as he contributed a ground-rule double with the bases loaded to break the game open. Ryan Ward followed that with an RBI infield single.
The Dodgers scored again in the seventh on Buddy Reed’s two-run homer.
Dodgers pitching against Giants
Several Dodgers regulars made the road trip, including Shelby Miller, Brusdar Graterol and Yency Almonte.
Miller completed a scoreless inning out of the bullpen but ran into trouble in the fifth and was removed after allowing two runs.
Graterol turned in a perfect inning, and Almonte allowed a pair of runs in the seventh during what was his 2023 debut.
