Spring Training Recap: Dodgers Blow Out Guardians At Goodyear Ballpark

Julio Urias bounced back from a shaky 2022 Spring Training debut and the Los Angeles Dodgers broke the game open late to complete a Cactus League sweep of the Cleveland Guardians with a 12-1 win at Goodyear Ballpark.

Urias allowed leadoff singles in the first and second innings, but retired the next three batters faced both times. He kept the Guardians off balance behind a steady dose of sharp offspeed pitches and finished with three strikeouts over four scoreless innings.

Urias capped off his outing by retiring the final nine batters faced. His next start figures to come during the exhibition Freeway Series in what would be a final tuneup of Spring Training.

Urias exited with the Dodgers holding a 4-0 lead. They initially jumped ahead when AJ Pollock clubbed a solo home run in the first inning. That gave Pollock two hits this spring, with both being homers.

Max Muncy connected for an RBI double in the fourth inning, and Cody Bellinger caught a break when his blooper to shallow left field dropped for a base hit that plated a run. The Dodgers scored again when Hanser Alberto grounded into a double play.

Ernie Clement hit a two-out home run off Evan Phillips, who appeared to give up another solo shot but umpires did not see Austin Hedges’ ball clear the fence before rolling back into play. Hedges had to settle for a long single, and Phillips escape the inning immediately after.

The Dodgers broke the game open in the ninth inning behind shoddy pitching and defense by the Guardians. Eddy Alvarez added to their woes with a grand slam.

Price’s 2022 Dodgers Spring Training debut

David Price entered in the sixth inning for his 2022 debut and struck out two batters. Price’s fastball velocity touched 93 mph during his perfect inning of relief.

The veteran left-hander reported to camp with a focus on making positive contributions this season, and it appears that will need to come out of the bullpen. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has already indicated Andrew Heaney and Tony Gonsolin are likely filling out the Opening Day rotation.
