Spring Training Preview: Mookie Betts Starts At 2nd Base, Dodgers All-Stars Tony Gonsolin & Tyler Anderson Face Off

The exhibition Freeway Series begins in Arizona for a Cactus League matchup as the Los Angeles Dodgers face the Los Angeles Angels at Tempe Diablo Stadium in the first of five Spring Training meetings.

Tony Gonsolin makes his first start of the year as he looks to build on an elite 2022 season. The right-hander should be an important part of the Dodgers rotation this season, likely as the No. 3 starter behind Julio Urías and Clayton Kershaw.

Last year, Gonsolin earned his first All-Star Game selection with a 2.14 ERA in 130.1 innings pitched, along with 119 strikeouts and a 0.87 WHIP.

Scheduled to follow Gonsolin in some order are Dylan Covey, Justin Bruihl, Robbie Erlin, James Jones, Jake Reed and Nick Robertson.

Tyler Anderson is on the mound for the Angels for the first time since signing a three-year contract. Last year with the Dodgers, the veteran left-hander had a breakout season, posting a 2.57 ERA in 178.2 innings with 138 strikeouts and a 1.00 WHIP, which earned him his first career All-Star selection.

The Angels are looking for Anderson to stabilize a young rotation and help get them back into the playoffs for the first time since 2014. He was part of a busy offseason for the Halos, which also included them acquiring Hunter Renfroe, Brandon Drury, Gio Urshela, Matt Moore and Carlos Estévez.

Anderson faces a Dodgers lineup that includes Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, Chris Taylor, Max Muncy and J.D. Martinez. Betts is starting at second base for the first time this spring, and he may occasionally play the position for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic and during the regular season as well.
