Spring Training Preview: Michael Grove Continues Audition For Dodgers Starting Rotation In Matchup With Guardians

The Los Angeles Dodgers are back at Camelback Ranch on Monday to face the Cleveland Guardians and have an opportunity to tie their longest winning streak of 2023 Spring Training at three games.

Michael Grove takes the mound as he looks to continue what’s been an impressive showing in Cactus League play. Grove’s performance is all the more magnified in the wake of Tony Gonsolin suffering a sprained left ankle that is likely to keep him off the Dodgers Opening Day roster.

Grove has built up his pitch count with each outing and allowed just one run in six innings over three starts thus far. The right-hander is coming off consecutive scoreless starts.

Although Grove is a candidate to be part of the Dodgers Opening Day rotation, he’s keeping focused on improving each day rather than the potential larger opportunity.

Matt Andriese, Gavin Stone and Jake Reed are among those scheduled to appear out of the Dodgers bullpen.

The Guardians counter with Zach Plesac, who is entering his fifth season with the club. Plesac didn’t have an encouraging start to the spring after struggling in 2022 as he allowed five runs (four earned) in just 1.2 innings pitched.

He followed that up by holding the Milwaukee Brewers to just one run over 2.1 innings, but the March 3 outing was the right-hander’s last time on the mound.

Plesac faces a Dodgers lineup that includes projected everyday starters Miguel Rojas, Max Muncy, J.D. Martinez and Miguel Vargas. Also starting is Jason Heyward, who figures to get his fair share of playing time during the regular season.
