The Los Angeles Dodgers begin their 2022 Spring Training schedule Friday with many members of their projected lineup getting an opportunity at first at-bats during Cactus League play.
The Dodgers face the Milwaukee Brewers at Camelback Ranch, with Clayton Kershaw receiving the start. Non-roster invitee Beau Burrows was originally penciled in as the starter, but he instead will be available to pitch out of the bullpen.
Kershaw has spoken extensively about his need to ramp up his workload and be fully stretched out prior to the start of the season. This will be his first start in a long road to him succeeding in that venture by Opening Day.
Kershaw conceivably could make a normal turn through the rotation during Spring Training and start Opening Day for the Dodgers on an extra day of rest. However, the team has not yet committed to any sort of outline.
Starting opposite Kershaw is Brewers top prospect Ethan Small. He put up a 1.99 ERA across 76.1 innings of work in the Minors last year and ranks as their sixth-best prospect, according to FanGraphs.
Trea Turner gets a chance to set the table for the Dodgers lineup, and he’s immediately followed by Justin Turner and Will Smith. Freddie Freeman is not yet playing, but he officially has been signed to a six-year contract.
Former Dodgers infielder Tyler White is the starting designated hitter for the Brewers.
