Juan Soto is far and away considered the best player available as the Washington Nationals reportedly are fielding a wide range of interest for their superstar, but a potential Shohei Ohtani trade could send similar shockwaves through the sport.
Los Angeles Angels owner Arte Moreno historically has been against his team becoming a seller at the trade deadline, but there have been recent indications Ohtani could be on the move. Despite a strong start to the 2022 season, the Angels have again faded from postseason contention.
Ohtani is in the final season of a two-year, $8.5 million contract, but has one more season of salary arbitration remaining. The likelihood of the Angels re-signing Ohtani once he reaches free agency after the 2023 season has steadily declined over recent weeks.
With an uncertain future, the Dodgers have reportedly attempted to start Ohtani trade talks with the Angels, according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network:
While a Shohei Ohtani trade is viewed as unlikely, sources say the #Dodgers have tried to engage the #Angels regarding the possibility of acquiring the superstar. Many in the industry are skeptical that Ohtani would be dealt to the Angels’ geographic rival. @MLBNetwork @MLB

The Dodgers’ reported interest in Ohtani is nothing short of expected. The Angels were said to have received calls from several clubs both prior to and since reports of possibly moving the two-way star.
When Ohtani made the jump to Major League Baseball, he met with and considered signing with the Dodgers before ultimately deciding on the Angels. While Ohtani has regularly spoken highly of the organization, he also has been open about a desire to win a World Series.
Should the Dodgers trade for Juan Soto or Shohei Ohtani?
Soto and Ohtani are both elite talents that would immediately improve the roster. Of course, Ohtani brings forth an element of also being able to contribute as a starting pitcher.
Soto is five years younger at 23 and isn’t due to become a free agent until after the 2024 season.
