Shohei Ohtani Pitching Tuesday To Give Tyler Glasnow Extra Rest

Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Shohei Ohtani and Tyler Glasnow are lined up to start for the Los Angeles Dodgers in their three-game series against the Miami Marlins this week.

Ohtani would generally be scheduled to take the mound on Wednesday before an off-day, but the Dodgers decided to let him pitch one day earlier to give Glasnow extra rest.

“Keep him on schedule as far as the rotation,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts explained on SportsNet LA before Sunday’s series finale against the Chicago Cubs.

“Tyler pitched a lot. And that’s the thing, we just don’t have to be beholden to just the off day. We felt we could talk to Shohei. He feels good about going on Tuesday.”

Glasnow allowed just one hit over a season-high eight scoreless innings in his most recent start against the San Francisco Giants on April 23. Roberts said they made the call to flip Ohtani and Glasnow in the rotation after the outing.

“It was after. Yep, it was after,” Roberts noted. “And then given how we pushed Tyler to then have him go on regular, it just didn’t make a whole lot of sense in total.”

Glasnow has logged at least six innings in all five of his starts this season, including a combined 15 frames over his last two appearances. Given his high usage, the team feels an extra day of rest would be beneficial to his long-term health.

Glasnow has been a huge part of the Dodgers’ success this season as he is 3-0 with a 2.45 ERA, 0.70 WHIP and 10.4 strikeouts per nine in 33 innings pitched.

Shohei Ohtani pitching on shorter rest

Ohtani’s upcoming start against the Marlins will come on only five days of rest for the first time this season. He made his previous three starts on either six or seven days of rest.

Like Glasnow, Ohtani has gotten off to a hot start on the mound. He has allowed only two runs (one earned) in 24 innings of work this season, which is good for a minuscule 0.38 ERA.

Ohtani has also recorded 25 strikeouts against six walks while sporting a 1.92 FIP and 0.75 WHIP in four starts. There is a belief that the two-way star wants to win a Cy Young Award this season, and he has certainly done his part thus far.
