Scott Boras Believes Door Remains Open For Julio Urías To Make MLB Comeback

Julio Urías saw what was shaping up to be a promising MLB career come to a crashing halt in September 2023, when he was arrested and placed on administrative leave amid an investigation into alleged felony domestic assault.

Urías became a free agent that offseason but was not signed by any team and still remained a free agent at the time of being suspended in March 2025 through the All-Star break of that year. The left-hander was officially reinstated on July 17, 2025, but has yet to resume his career in any capacity.

MLB teams interested in Julio Urías?

According to Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times, Scott Boras suggested Urías potentially returning is a personal decision and there are teams that have inquired.

“Teams ask me about him all the time,” Boras said. “With the pitching market in this world, Julio could play in a minute. But I think it’s about him deciding if it’s something he wants to go do right now.”

When Urías came off the restricted list, Boras said his client “still has every intention to continue his career.” But that has not come to fruition, whether by personal decision or lack of sincere interest from MLB teams.

There have been seven players to be suspended under MLB’s joint domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy that was established in 2015. Of those seven players, only Domingo Germán and Marcell Ozuna continued their Major League careers.

Germán played parts of four seasons beyond his suspension in 2020, while Ozuna returned with the Atlanta Braves following his suspension in 2021 before joining the Pittsburgh Pirates this year.

However, Urías was the first repeat offender under the policy, with his first suspension occurring in 2019.

Julio Urías’ Dodgers career

The Dodgers signed Urías out of Mexico at the age of 16 in 2012. Urías became the top left-handed pitching prospect in baseball and made his MLB debut in 2016.

He was the first 19-year-old to pitch for the Dodgers since fellow Mexican native Fernando Valenzuela accomplished the feat in 1980. Urías also became the first teenager to start for the team since Dick Calmus in 1963.

Urías went 60-25 with a 3.11 ERA in 158 career appearances (122 starts) across eight seasons with the Dodgers. He most notably recorded the final out of the Dodgers’ 2020 World Series win and received votes for the National League Cy Young Award in both 2021 and 2022.
