The Los Angeles Dodgers were heavily involved in this year’s Rule 5 Draft, though primarily for the number of prospects they had selected by other organizations.

The Dodgers passed on making a pick during the Major League portion and later selected Ryan January from the Arizona Diamondbacks, and Roimer Bolivar from the Tampa Bay Rays. L.A. saw Brett de Geus (Texas Rangers) and Jordan Sheffield (Colorado Rockies) taken during the MLB phase of the Rule 5 Draft, and six others in the ensuing rounds.

January shared his excitement with joining the Dodgers in a social media post to Twitter, during which he also expressed gratitude for the Diamondbacks organization:

“The amazing journey continues as I was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Rule 5 Draft. Today is a bittersweet day. I will forever be grateful to the Diamondbacks for drafting me and giving me the chance to realize my dream of playing professional baseball. I am incredibly thankful to Josh Barfield and all of the Diamondbacks managers, coaches, trainers & support staff for helping me get to this level. I loved playing with all of the guys I have played with and for. I have developed friendships that will last a lifetime.

“I am humbled and beyond excited at the thought of playing for the World Championship Dodgers organization and can’t thank them enough for believing in my ability to play the game. I look forward to this great opportunity more than anyone could realize.

“Thanks to everyone that continues to support and believe in me. I play the game for you! I can’t wait to get to Spring Training.

“I officially bleed Dodger Blue!”

The 23-year-old was originally selected by the Diamondbacks in the eighth round of the 2016 MLB Draft. January has appeared in 126 games over parts of three Minor League seasons and has yet to play above the Low-A level.

Although primarily a catcher, January has spent some time in both corner outfield positions. Various scouting reports suggest he may need to move off catching and instead play the outfield or first base.

Dodgers re-classify Quakes, Loons

The Dodgers extended invitations to Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Great Lakes and Rancho Cucamonga to keep them as Minor League affiliates. However, that also entailed re-classifying the Loons to High-A and moving the Quakes to Low-A.
