The bottom of the Los Angeles Dodgers lineup again was productive, which amounted to a win that has set the stage for a series rubber match with the Colorado Rockies.
Gavin Stone is coming off another stellar outing that saw him tie a career high with seven innings pitched. He held the New York Mets scoreless and allowed just three hits while collecting seven strikeouts without issuing a walk.
Stone first completed seven innings against the Toronto Blue Jays on April 26, and he’s reached the mark three times this season.
The right-hander recently was praised by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts for becoming a dependable part of the starting rotation, and Stone has continued to live up to that by logging at least six innings in six consecutive outings. He’s allowed one earned run or fewer in five of those starts.
Overall this season, Stone is 5-2 with a 3.16 ERA, 3.50 FIP and 1.19 WHIP across 10 starts.
The Rockies counter with Austin Gomber, who’s been the victim of some bad luck this season and enters 1-2 with a 2.76 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 10 starts.
Gomber is making his first start since getting scratched from a Memorial Day outing because of left shoulder soreness. He went eight innings and allowed just one run to the Oakland Athletics on May 22. Gomber has held opponents to one earned run or fewer in four consecutive starts.
Over his career at Dodger Stadium, the left-hander is 0-1 with a 3.79 ERA in four starts. Gomber faces a Dodgers lineup that includes Miguel Vargas and Austin Barnes spelling regulars.
Vargas has received sporadic opportunities since getting recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City last month, but had a combined three RBI in two starts during the New York Mets series.
