Rockies Vs. Dodgers Game Preview: Dustin May Starts On Extended Rest

The Los Angeles Dodgers can improve to a perfect 5-0 on their homestand and earn another series win with a second consecutive victory against the Colorado Rockies.

Dustin May makes his second start of the regular season on nine days’ rest. He originally was scheduled to face the Washington Nationals in Sunday’s series finale, but Dodgers manager Dave Roberts wanted to keep Clayton Kershaw on a regular routine.

“It’s a long season, so Dustin to kind of curtail some days and get him back in there, that was kind of the impetus behind that,” Roberts explained. “He’ll be slotted in shortly. It’s just kind of pushing him back a little bit to keep Clayton on line.”

May tossed six shutout innings in his regular season debut against the Oakland Athletics on April 5. He particularly was pleased with his cutter, which generated many swings-and-misses.

Wednesday marks May’s first career start against the Rockies. He carries with him into the outing a 2.38 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 45.1 innings at Dodger Stadium.

Colorado counters with Jon Gray, who makes his third start of the year. He has been dominant thus far, allowing only two runs in his first 11.2 innings pitched.

The right-hander held the Dodgers to only one run in five innings on April 3. He was tabbed with a no-decision, as L.A. went on to earn a comeback victory.

In 16 career starts against the Dodgers, Gray is 5-6 with a 4.45 ERA and 1.47 WHIP over 83 frames.

Mookie Betts not only is in the lineup again, but starting in center field. He returned Tuesday night after missing the past week due to lower back stiffness. Justin Turner is also playing after receiving a night off for rest.

Meanwhile, Matt Beaty makes his first start of the season.
