The Los Angeles Dodgers formally announced their starting pitchers for the Seoul Series and to no one’s surprise it will be Tyler Glasnow and Yoshinobu Yamamoto taking the mound in South Korea against the San Diego Padres.
Glasnow received the honor of being named the Dodgers’ Opening Day starter. Glasnow is entering his ninth MLB season and this will be the second time in his career he is starting on Opening Day.
Meanwhile, Yamamoto is poised to make his MLB debut in the second game of the Seoul Series. In his first Spring Training with the Dodgers, Yamamoto has had a mixed bag with one extremely good outing and another that was more of a struggle.
Part of Spring Training has also been adjusting to being on an MLB schedule, which Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said was a factor in having Yamamoto start the second game of the Seoul Series rather than on Opening Day, per Bill Plunkett of the Southern California News Group:
“First off, we feel both guys are top-end guys,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “But if you look at the schedule for Yoshinobu going out, it sets up more for potential days of rest.”
Much has been made about Yamamoto’s ability to handle the change from Nippon Professional Baseball’s (NPB) six days of rest to a more traditional five in MLB, but it should be manageable with the Dodgers being one of the best at getting their starters extra rest in between outings.
As it stands, Yamamoto’s starts in Spring Training have all come on Wednesdays and one week apart. That will change once the regular season rolls around as his next outing is Thursday, March 21.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto benefitting from Shohei Ohtani?
When recently discussing Ohtani and Yamamoto making respective jumps stateside from Japan, Roberts expressed his belief that having the two-way star already established and on the Dodgers roster has been a key benefit for the right-hander.
