The Los Angeles Dodgers returned home after a tough road trip and defeated the Chicago Cubs, 3-0, to keep a perfect record at Dodger Stadium in 2025. They are now 7-0 at home this year, compared to 4-4 on the road, including two wins in Japan.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Tommy Edman led the way in the win as both continued their hot starts to the season.
Yamamoto was nearly perfect during his outing and turned in one of the best starts of his MLB career, baffling the Cubs throughout the night. The right-hander tossed six scoreless innings while allowing just two hits, striking out nine and walking one.
Yamamoto was perfect through 3.1 innings, but ended up allowing a double and single in the fourth. However, a baserunning mistake and strikeout got the Dodgers out of the inning and kept a zero on the board.
The Cubs did not record another baserunner until a two-out walk in the sixth inning, but Yamamoto came back by striking out Kyle Tucker to end the inning.
However, the Dodgers offense also failed to score against Cubs starter Matthew Boyd for the majority of his outing. But they finally broke through in the sixth inning.
Teoscar Hernández started them off with a one-out single and Freddie Freeman was hit by a pitch, putting two on for Edman, who then blasted his sixth homer of the season to give the Dodgers the lead.
The surprising power output from Edman has him leading the Dodgers in home runs, and he’s also tied for the MLB lead, along with Aaron Judge, Kyle Schwarber, Tyler Soderstrom and Mike Trout.
Following Yamamoto, the Dodgers bullpen picked up where he left off with three scoreless innings to close out the game. Kirby Yates pitched a perfect seventh with two strikeouts, Treinen tossed a perfect eighth and Tanner Scott closed out the game in the ninth, also throwing a perfect inning.
Freddie Freeman returns to Dodgers lineup
Prior to the game, the Dodgers activated Freeman off the 10-day injured list, as expected. He was first placed on the IL on April 3 because of a sprained right ankle that came days after he slipped in the shower and aggravated his surgically-repaired ankle.
Freeman described his time away from the team as “very weird.”
“Watching the games on TV, man, it looks really easy. It’s weird,” Freeman said. “I watched every pitch, I was invested with trying to cheer them on from over here. A little weird, but I did everything I could to get back as fast as I could. I think we did a good job of that.”
Freeman went 0-for-3 in his return, but scored a run on Edman’s homer.
