Will Smith slugged a pinch-hit walk-off homer for the Los Angeles Dodgers to secure a 5-4 victory and avoid a sweep to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Shohei Ohtani started the Dodgers off in the first inning with a single, and Mookie Betts followed with one of his own. Freddie Freeman then doubled home the first run of the game, and Betts came around to score on a ground out by Andy Pages to put the Dodgers up 2-0.
The Dodgers added on in the fourth inning, started by a walk from Michael Conforto and a pair of singles from Alex Freeland and Miguel Rojas, who drove in the third run of the game.
Pages drove in his second run of the game in the fifth inning after Betts reached on a single and moved into scoring position after Freeman grounded out. Pages’ second RBI of the game gave the Dodgers their fourth run of the afternoon.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto turned in a brilliant outing, striking out 10 hitters over seven innings. He allowed just one run on four hits and walked no one.
The D-Backs scored their lone run in the fourth inning after Ketel Marte and Corbin Carroll both singled to reach base. Adrian Del Castillo then singled home Marte, which made it a 2-1 score at the time.
Unfortunately for Yamamoto, his efforts were not enough to earn him the win.
After he exited the game in the eighth inning, Tanner Scott took over and recorded the first two outs in the inning. But then he allowed a single to Geraldo Perdomo, one to Marte, and a game-tying homer to Carroll.
Blake Treinen pitched the ninth inning to give the Dodgers a chance in the ninth. Smith hit for Dalton Rushing to begin the ninth and homered on the second pitch he saw.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto strikes out 10 hitters
This was the third time in his career that Yamamoto has struck out 10 hitters in a game, with the other two outings both coming this year.
Yamamoto also struck out 10 against the Detroit Tigers on March 28, pulling off the feat for the first time in his career over just five innings of work. He then did it again against the Texas Rangers on April 18, which came over seven shutout innings.
