Recap: Tyler Glasnow Flirts With No-Hitter, But Dodgers Sloppy In Loss To Diamondbacks

Tyler Glasnow took a no-hitter into the sixth inning but the Los Angeles Dodgers failed to provide any run support and suffered a second consecutive loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks, falling 6-1.

Despite appearing to have blood coming from his right hand, Glasnow retired the first 10 batters faced before hitting Ketel Marte with a pitch to give the Diamondbacks their first baserunner of the game with one out in the fourth inning. Glasnow then retired six more batters in a row before Ildemaro Vargas beat the shift with an infield single.

Glasnow then lost his bid at a scoreless start when he gave up a leadoff home run to Corbin Carroll in the seventh inning that put the Diamondbacks ahead 1-0. Matters spiraled from there, with Glasnow giving up back-to-back doubles in part because of Teoscar Hernández’s inability to get to one of the fly balls.

A sacrifice fly to center field then scored two runs because Andy Pages’ throw got by third base.

Glasnow provided the Dodgers with length by pitching seven innings, but exited the game facing a 3-1 deficit.

After recent signs of collective improvement earlier in the week, the Dodgers’ offense struggled for a second night in a row. Running into outs on the bases did not help matters.

The first such instance was Freddie Freeman being tagged out on his attempt to take third base after leading off the fourth inning with a double.

In the fifth, Kiké Hernández was thrown out at home plate on Shohei Ohtani’s fly ball to left field. Hernández inexplicably attempted to score standing up and was tagged out just before he could touch the plate.

Back-to-back walks by Will Smith and Freeman led to more frustration in the sixth, as Teoscar Hernández struck out and Pages hit into an inning-ending double play.

Diamondbacks starter Eduardo Rodriguez, who infamously vetoed a trade to the Dodgers in 2023, got through six scoreless innings despite allowing four hits and walking four batters.

Mookie Betts’ RBI single in the seventh prevented the Dodgers from being shut out and snapped a streak of 15 consecutive scoreless innings but they couldn’t mount a comeback against the Diamondbacks’ bullpen.

Any semblance of applying pressure was washed away when Kirby Yates surrendered a three-run home run to Vargas in the ninth inning.

Dodgers trying to avoid Diamondbacks’ sweep

For a second consecutive weekend the Dodgers find themselves facing a potential sweep. They managed to salvage their series at Petco Park with an encouraging win and now look to do so again in the finale of their homestand.
