Recap: Tony Gonsolin Has Short Start In Dodgers’ Loss To Giants

Tony Gonsolin and Kevin Gausman both surrendered back-to-back home runs and failed to provide any length, which was more costly to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a 7-2 loss to the San Francisco Giants. The Giants extended their lead in the National League West to two games.

Gonsolin labored in the first inning and surrendered a two-run home run to Buster Posey, which Wilmer Flores followed by clubbing a solo shot to left-center field. Gonsolin allowed a double, two homers and three runs just four batters into the game.

Gausman singled off Gonsolin, who also issued a walk to put two on with on out in the second inning, but he managed to prevent the Giants from adding to their lead. Gonsolin stranded another baserunner in the third and exited after back-to-back walks in the fourth inning.

Gausman’s short outing was further similar to Gonsolin’s in that he allowed back-to-back home runs to Max Muncy and Justin Turner in the first inning. Gausman then hit Will Smith with a pitch and walked Cody Bellinger, but retired the next two batters faced.

L.A. failed to execute following Zach McKinstry’s leadoff double in the second inning, with Gonsolin striking out on a sacrifice bunt attempt and Chris Taylor going down swinging. Gausman worked himself into a jam by walking Muncy and Turner to load the bases, only to wiggle out of trouble once more.

The Dodgers struggled to get much of anything against the Giants’ bullpen and eventually saw their deficit grow in a shaky seventh inning. Phil Bickford gave way to Victor Gonzalez, who inherited a runner with one out and struggled mightily in his return from the 10-day injured list.

Gonzalez was greeted by a pair of singles to load the bases, then a sacrifice fly, two-run double and RBI extra-base hit before he could get out of the inning.

Dodgers’ injuries mounting

Although the Dodgers may welcome back Corey Seager in the coming days, Gavin Lux was put on the 10-day IL with a left hamstring strain and Mookie Betts was scratched from the lineup because of right hip irritation.
