Recap: Tony Gonsolin Latest Dodgers Starter To Struggle; Road Trip Ends With Series Loss To Royals

Tony Gonsolin followed Julio Urías with a disastrous outing of his own, and the Los Angeles Dodgers lineup couldn’t make up for it in a 9-1 loss to the Kansas City Royals in the rubber match. The Dodgers went .500 on their latest road trip against losing teams and fell to 22-22 away from Dodger Stadium this season.

Gonsolin failed to make it through the fourth inning as he retired just 10 of 21 batters faced. The Royals reached against the right-hander on six hits, three walks and one hit by pitch.

Gonsolin managed to pitch through some traffic in the first inning but Kansas City took a 1-0 lead in the second. A leadoff walk in the fourth inning led to trouble as it was followed by a base hit and two-run double. Bobby Witt Jr. capped off the three-run inning with an RBI single.

In his past three starts, Gonsolin has allowed a combined 15 runs in just 14.1 innings pitched and allowed opponents to bat .304 during that stretch.

Although Victor González managed to retire his first batter faced to end the fourth inning, the Royals found success against him by scoring three more runs in the fifth.

Mookie Betts’ error on a grounder led to Yency Almonte giving up two runs — both unearned — in the sixth inning. The three consecutive innings with multiple runs effectively put the game away for the Royals. Nicky Lopez, their No. 9 hitter, finished with a game-high four RBI.

The Dodgers had six hits and scored their lone run on Miguel Vargas’ sacrifice fly in the fourth inning. David Peralta had three of them, to extend his hitting streak to eight games.

Yonny Hernández pitches for Dodgers

Due to the lopsided nature of the game, the Dodgers turned to Yonny Hernández in the eighth inning for his pitching debut. Hernández allowed a two-out single in an otherwise scoreless frame.

Hernández became the 31st different pitcher the Dodgers have used this season. Their franchise record for a single season is 39 pitchers, set in 2021.
