Tony Gonsolin turned in another quality start and the Los Angeles Dodgers received home runs from Will Smith, Cody Bellinger and Trea Turner in a 4-1 win over the Chicago White Sox that snapped a three-game losing streak.
The Dodgers jumped on Johnny Cueto early, beginning with Smith’s two-run homer in the first inning. Bellinger then led off the second with his seventh home run of the season.
The L.A. offense went quiet from there but Gonsolin did his part to protect the lead. Gonsolin extended his career-best streak of consecutive starts with at least six innings pitched to five. He held the White Sox to just one run, which came on Jake Burger’s leadoff homer in the bottom of the fifth.
Burger had two of the White Sox’s three hits off Gonsolin. They continued to threaten in the fifth inning as Gavin Sheets’ double and an AJ Pollock walk put two on with nobody out. But like he has throughout the season, Gonsolin continued to strand baserunners.
Gonsolin exited with a 3-1 lead and a National League-best 1.58 ERA as he remains in line to likely earn a first career All-Star Game selection.
The Dodgers’ bullpen got back on track after two consecutive shaky games, beginning with Yency Almonte setting the White Sox down in order in the seventh inning. Brusdar Graterol then followed suit in what was an encouraging turnaround from his last time out.
With Craig Kimbrel remaining on the paternity list until this weekend’s series against the San Francisco Giants, Daniel Hudson was called on to convert the save.
Hudson was providing some additional breathing room by Trea Turner on a leadoff home run in the ninth inning. The homer was Turner’s second in the past three games and also snapped a string of 11 Dodgers batters retired in a row.
