Recap: Shohei Ohtani Slugs 30th Home Run As Offense Carries Dodgers To Victory

After a dominant win in the series opener, the Los Angeles Dodgers continued their reign over the Rockies with a second straight victory at Coors Field.

With their win, the Dodgers are now back to .500 since the All-Star break, going 15-15. They also clinched their 26th series win of the year, going 26-12-3 thus far.

Since the start of the 2023 season, the Dodgers are 40-11 against the Rockies, including a 19-8 mark at Coors Field in that time. Colorado hasn’t won a series with Los Angeles since June 27-29, 2022, and the Dodgers have won eight of their last nine games against the Rockies.

L.A. is 9-3 against Colorado this season and 25-17 in 41 games vs. the National League West. The Dodgers have won the season series over the Rockies for nine consecutive campaigns (2018-26).

Dodgers 7, Rockies 6: key takeaways

Dodgers offense keeps on hitting

The Dodgers scored 11 runs in the series opener and came back with seven runs on Tuesday. They tallied 10 hits, including a combined three from Teoscar Hernández and Kyle Tucker, who have both been in long slumps this season.

Shohei Ohtani also slugged his 30th homer of the year, marking the third consecutive season he’s reached the 30 home run total with the Dodgers. He is one of just seven players in Dodgers history to record three consecutive seasons of at least 30 long balls, joining Gil Hodges, Duke Snider, Mike Piazza, Eric Karros, Raul Mondesi and Gary Sheffield.

The Dodgers’ runs were driven in by Ohtani (two), Freddie Freeman (two), Max Muncy, Tucker and Hernández (one each). Freeman, Tommy Edman and Hernández each had two hits in the game, and the latter two each had a pair of extra-base hits.

Although the Dodgers are playing at an extremely friendly hitter’s park against bad pitching, their offensive outburst the last two games has still been encouraging, given their struggles since the start of June, which has even included poor offensive performances against pitchers they should be hitting.

Eric Lauer turns in decent outing

Eric Lauer wasn’t able to turn in a quality start in this one as he has so often for the Dodgers this season, but he still managed to turn in a decent outing in a difficult environment.

The left-hander held the Rockies to four runs over five innings, allowing six hits while walking one and tallying six strikeouts. The Dodgers would have loved to see him get one more inning at least, but pitching in Coors Field is not an easy task for anyone.

For nearly any pitcher, especially one at the back of a rotation, getting through an outing in Colorado with the lead intact can be classified as a win.

Bullpen closes it out

After Lauer, the Dodgers’ bullpen was able to protect the three-run lead. Jack Dreyer and Edgardo Henriquez each worked a scoreless inning, and then Evan Phillips entered for the eighth.

Phillips allowed one run on two hits and a walk while recording two outs as he has continued to search for his previous form after returning from Tommy John surgery. Tanner Scott entered with two on and two outs in the eighth and recorded the final out to strand the runners.

Scott stayed in for the ninth inning and finished off the four-out save, but allowed a run in the process after a double and single.
