Shohei Ohtani hit his first home run with the Los Angeles Dodgers as they completed a series sweep of the San Francisco Giants by hanging on for a 5-4 win.
Ohtani has put together a solid but unspectacular season so far and recently mentioned his timing at the plate had been off. His first hit of the game was a slap single that helped lead to the Dodgers scoring two runs in the third inning that gave them a 3-1 lead.
Ohtani then provided fireworks in the seventh inning with a 430-foot blast to the pavilion in right-center field that extended the Dodgers’ lead to 5-3 and wound up proving to be the difference.
Before Ohtani stole the show, Miguel Rojas hit his second home run of the season to give him two RBI on the night.
Tyler Glasnow turned in the longest start of his young Dodgers career by throwing 100 pitches over six innings. The right-hander fared well early before running into some trouble in the sixth.
Prior to that point, Patrick Bailey was the only thorn in Glasnow’s side with a solo home run in the third inning. But a one-out walk in the sixth wound up leading to trouble as Jorge Soler followed with a double.
The Dodgers looked to push Glasnow through the inning considering their short bullpen and he managed to finish off the sixth but not before allowing a two-run single to Michael Conforto.
Dodgers bullpen pieced together
After Glasnow, the Dodgers first turned to Joe Kelly, who bounced back from a rough outing by retiring the side in order in the seventh inning.
With Evan Phillips unavailable, Daniel Hudson was the designated closer but he appeared in the eighth to face the top of the Giants’ lineup. Hudson surrendered a solo home run to Soler that nearly was hit out of Dodger Stadium in center field.
Dinelson Lamet took over in the ninth inning and completed his first career save.
