The Los Angeles Dodgers ended their road trip with a series victory against the Oakland Athletics behind a 3-2 win on Sunday. That snapped a streak of five consecutive road series losses for the Dodgers.
Coming off a record-setting performance that included pitching the ninth inning, Kiké Hernández gave the Dodgers an early lead in the series finale with his two-run double.
That lead wound up being short-lived as Brent Rooker hit a game-tying, two-run home run in the bottom of the first. River Ryan largely settled in from there but was chased with two outs in the fifth inning.
That snapped a streak of Ryan completing at least 5.1 innings in every start so far into his young Dodgers career.
He exited with the bases loaded, which Evan Phillips bailed the Dodgers out of by freezing Rooker with a backdoor sweeper.
That kept the Dodgers ahead after they had taken a lead in the third inning by capitalizing on a misplay in right field. Lawrence Butler’s error allowed Jason Heyward to move into scoring position on his single, and Cavan Biggio took advantage with a two-out RBI base hit.
Gavin Lux extended his hitting streak to nine games with a single in the fifth inning. Lux hit .400/.515/.600 with two doubles, one home run, seven RBI, .473 wOBA and 213 wRC+ during the first eight games of the stretch.
Dodgers bullpen
After Phillips got the Dodgers out of a bases-loaded jam, manager Dave Roberts turned to four additional relief pitchers to finish out the game.
Blake Treinen stranded a sun double in the sixth inning as part of his back-to-back appearance. The weekend series was sentimental for Treinen, who pitched for the A’s in parts of three seasons from 2017-2019.
Alex Vesia pitched the seventh inning, Daniel Hudson handled the heart of the A’s lineup in the eighth, and Anthony Banda filled the closer role. The save was Banda’s first of the season and second in his career.
