Recap: Justin Wrobleski & Tommy Edman Help Dave Roberts Reach 1,000 Career Wins

The Los Angeles Dodgers took another series victory with a second straight win over the Athletics, and now have a chance to sweep the series on Wednesday.

The Dodgers have now won each series on their nine-game road trip against the Minnesota Twins, San Diego Padres and Athletics, and they have gone 7-1 so far.

Dodgers 9, Athletics 3: key takeaways

Justin Wrobleski picks up 10th win

Justin Wrobleski picked up his 10th win before the start of July, making him one of only two Dodgers pitchers to do so over the last decade, joining Clayton Kershaw, who did it three times in 2016, 2017, and 2023.

Wrobleski also set a new career high with 11 strikeouts in his outing, beating his previous best mark of nine. The Shark also became the first Dodgers pitcher with at least 11 strikeouts since Blake Snell last September.

The southpaw was through six innings while allowing only one run, but surrendered a two-run homer in the seventh. Fortunately, the Dodgers already had a significant lead to that point.

The first run he allowed came on a pair of singles in the first inning, but he may have been able to prevent that run from scoring had Kyle Tucker not lost the ball in the sun. It would have been a difficult play regardless, but it cost them some time on the relay to the plate.

Wrobleski finished his outing going seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with 11 strikeouts and no walks. Wrobleski also tied Yoshinobu Yamamoto for the Dodgers’ lead with 11 starts of at least six innings this season.

Tommy Edman leads offensive outburst

Tommy Edman led the Dodgers on. offense with a 4-for-5 day, which included his first home run, four runs driven in and two runs scored. Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts also contributed multi-hit games, with Freeman scoring two runs and Betts driving in two, plus scoring a run.

Betts started the scoring with an RBI single in the first inning, and Teoscar Hernández extended the lead with a sacrifice fly. Edman broke the score open in the third inning with his three-run shot after Freeman doubled and Tucker walked.

Miguel Rojas crushed his third homer of the season, giving the Dodgers a 6-1 lead in the sixth inning. The Dodgers went on to score three more in the seventh inning, starting with a double from Betts and walk from Hernández to open the inning.

Edman singled home the seventh run, Rojas hit a sacrifice fly for the eighth, and Dalton Rushing drove in the ninth with a single.

Dave Roberts reaches 1,000 career wins

With the win, Dave Roberts became the 69th manager in MLB history to reach 1,000 career wins. Roberts, A.J. Hinch and Terry Francona are the only active managers with at least 1,000 wins.

Walter Alston, Tommy Lasorda, Wilbert Robinson and Roberts are the only managers in Dodgers franchise history to win 1,000 games.

Roberts also set an MLB record for fastest to 1,000 manager wins in MLB history. Roberts needed just 1,606 games to reach the mark, which previously belonged to Cap Anson, who needed 1,641 games to reach 1,000 wins.

With three World Series rings as a manager and his new historic record, Roberts is a lock to enter the Baseball Hall of Fame one day, and he will likely go down as the greatest manager in Dodgers history.
