The Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs finished off their three-game series with the rubber match on Sunday afternoon at Dodger Stadium.
For the second straight game, Will Smith was out of the lineup due to back tightness. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts expected Smith to be back in the lineup today, but the catcher is currently day-to-day.
Dodgers 6, Cubs 0: key takeaways
Justin Wrobleski continues excellent season
Every time Justin Wrobleski has taken the ball for the Dodgers this season, there have been positive results, and that was no different today. The left-hander threw six scoreless innings to lower his season ERA to 1.50 across 30 innings.
He has now thrown at least six innings in three consecutive starts, allowing one run or fewer in all of them.
This start was more of a struggle for Wrobleski than his previous ones, as he didn’t have his best command and walked four hitters. But every time he ran into trouble, Wrobleski ended up getting out of the jam.
He ended up throwing 109 pitches, which is a season-high for any Dodgers’ pitcher as manager Dave Roberts continues to push his starting staff.
Dodgers offense gets timely hits
The Dodgers offense only had seven hits in the game, which is on the lower end for a six-run performance. But they were able to take better situational at-bats and took advantage of errors from the Cubs defense.
Shohei Ohtani reached base four times with three hits, including a home run, finishing a triple shy of the cycle. Miguel Rojas led the team with two RBI, while Kyle Tucker and Ohtani each had two runs scored.
Andy Pages started the scoring in the first inning with a sacrifice fly, and they went on to score three runs after back-to-back doubles from Tucker and Rojas.
That was all their scoring until the sixth inning when Dalton Rushing drove in Pages with a single. Tucker also ended up scoring on a throwing error by Carson Kelly.
Ohtani gave them their final run with his homer in the seventh inning.
Dodgers bullpens shuts down Cubs
Edgardo Henriquez, Jack Dreyer and Kyle Hurt combined to finish off the shutout against the Cubs. Henriquez walked two hitters, but still managed to prevent any damage in the seventh inning.
