Recap: Justin Turner Leads Dodgers In Tying Doubles Record During Rout Of Pirates

The Los Angeles Dodgers had a season-high eight doubles en route to an 11-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates to set the stage for a rubber match at PNC Park on Wednesday afternoon.

The Dodgers quickly got to Bryse Wilson one night after not scoring until the ninth inning. Freddie Freeman’s double in the first inning was followed by Trea Turner’s line drive going off Ben Gamel’s glove for an RBI extra base hit.

It was markedly different outcome from Gamel making a terrific diving catch to rob Justin Turner in the series opener. Turner added to Wilson’s trouble with a two-out drive that landed out of Gamel’s reach in left-center field for an RBI double.

A double by Trea Turner and Max Muncy’s walk set the table for Justin Turner in the third inning, and he delivered a two-run extra-base hit. Tuesday was Turner’s first game with multiple extra-base hits since Sept. 13, 2021.

Edwin Ríos plated Turner with his second single of the game, and Austin Barnes’ two-run double capped off the big inning. It was the sixth time this season Dodgers scored at least five runs in a single inning.

Already holding a comfortable lead, they further blew the game open in the seventh. Turner’s third double of the game scored Muncy, Cody Bellinger followed with an extra-base hit of his own, and Ríos hit a home run for the second consecutive night.

The Dodgers tied a Los Angeles franchise record with the eight doubles. Of their 15 hits on the night, 10 went for extra bases.

Gonsolin leads strong Dodgers pitching effort

Tony Gonsolin’s start began with a walk and double play, but the Pirates then ran into an out when Mookie Betts cut down Gamel at home plate on his attempt to tag. The outfield assist was Betts’ second in as many games.

While it was a highlight for Betts, his hitting streak was snapped at 10 games.

Gonsolin held the Pirates to just one hit and pitched five scoreless innings despite issuing four walks. Gonsolin finished his outing by retiring the final seven batters faced and continued to excel with runners in scoring position, as opponents are now just 2-for-23 in such situations this season.

Brusdar Graterol, Alex Vesia, Reyes Moronta and Phil Bickford each pitched an inning out of the bullpen. Moronta was the lone relief pitcher to allow a run.
