Recap: Dustin May Outdueled By Corbin Burnes In Dodgers’ Loss To Diamondbacks

The Los Angeles Dodgers were shut down by Corbin Burnes and couldn’t replicate their success from the previous night’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks bullpen in a 3-0 loss.

It was the Dodgers’ third shutout loss of the season, and the first of which that has come on the road. The Dodgers’ two previous games of being shut out were against the Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates, respectively. Prior to Saturday, the Dodgers hadn’t suffered a shutout loss on the road since July 26, 2024.

Dustin May turned in an encouraging performance after struggling in his last three starts, as he got through 6.2 innings and held the Diamondbacks to just two runs. May was efficient throughout his start and at times benefited from a generous strike zone as he worked through traffic in the early innings.

May was also aided by Michael Conforto making a terrific catch while crashing into the wall in foul territory off the left-field line to end the second inning.

But defense faltered some the next inning as Hyeseong Kim failed to make a running catch deep in center field. That resulted in a leadoff triple for Corbin Carroll, who then scored on Ketel Marte’s groundout.

The Diamondbacks’ lead remained 1-0 until Eugenio Suárez’s solo home run in the sixth inning.

May’s effort was bested by Corbin Burnes in his first start April 30. Burnes had his previous turn in the rotation skipped over due to right shoulder inflammation.

The Diamondbacks’ marquee offseason signee got through seven scoreless innings. The outing was Burnes’ longest of the season. It previously was six innings, which Burnes reached three times before his start against L.A.

The Dodgers put the leadoff man on base three times, and appeared primed to break through in the fifth. But after Austin Barnes’ sacrifice bunt moved Hyeseong Kim into scoring position, Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts both grounded out to second base.

Freddie Freeman had his 14-game hitting streak snapped.

Pavin Smith’s RBI double off Kirby Yates extended the Diamondbacks’ lead in the eighth inning.

Dodgers try to avoid series loss

At best the Dodgers will end their road trip with a series split at Chase Field. Saturday’s loss snapped their streak of consecutive series wins at five.
