The Los Angeles Dodgers saw their five-game winning streak come to an end with an 8-3 loss against the San Francisco Giants as their offense struggled and bullpen fell apart late.
Starting the game in the first inning, the Dodgers looked like they were going to get to Robbie Ray quickly as he struggled with his command and they put a rally together.
Ray hit Will Smith with a pitch, walked Freddie Freeman, hit Teoscar Hernández with a pitch and then walked Andy Pages to put the Dodgers up 1-0 with the bases still loaded and just one out.
But the Dodgers were not able to capitalize from there as they left them loaded with a strikeout from Miguel Vargas and pop up from Chris Taylor.
From there, Ray settled in to pitch five innings while striking out eight, only allowing the one run with two walks. Most notably, he did not give up a hit.
The Dodgers did not get their first hit until the seventh inning when Chris Taylor hit a ball into the right-center gap, but they were unable to capitalize on their opportunity to tie the game.
Tyler Glasnow made his return from the 15-day injured list after dealing with a case of “tall guy back,” that originally caused him to miss some time beginning just before the All-Star break.
Glasnow did not go on a Minor League rehab assignment, so some rust was expected, but Dodgers manager Dave Roberts expected Glasnow to turn in a strong start and be without any limitations.
“With Glass, it’s a shorter time away,” Roberts began. “I think he is very excited to get back to playing. He feels good, back, feels strong, healthy, he’s excited. I think he’s going to be fine, as far as kind of managing him.”
Glasnow was not particularly sharp, struggling with his command, but he kept the Dodgers in the game. After three scoreless innings, the right-hander gave up a home run that tied the game, followed by a double and single that put the Giants ahead.
He bounced back in the fifth to give the Dodgers five innings of two-run ball, striking out four and walking four while also giving up four hits.
Things fell apart for the Dodgers in the eighth inning with Yohan Ramírez on the mound. The Giants loaded the bases and ended up scoring two runs against him before Joe Kelly was called upon.
After getting one out, Kelly allowed four more runs to score before finally getting out of the inning. Five runs were charged to Ramírez and one to Kelly.
The Dodgers scored their second run when Freeman hit a routine fly ball that was misplayed by the Giants outfielders, allowing it to drop between them. Nick Ahmed scored after picking up his first hit as a member of the club.
On the bright side, Austin Barnes had a pinch-hit single and is now on a career-high 10-game hitting streak. They ended up scoring one more run in the ninth.
Chris Taylor exits game with injury
In the seventh inning when Taylor doubled to break up the no-hitter, he was limping as he ran into second base. Taylor was quickly checked on and taken out of the game with Cavan Biggio entering to run for him.
It would not be surprising to see him land on the IL now.
Earlier in the day, the Dodgers also lost Miguel Rojas to the injured list and signed Ahmed to a contract.
