Recap: Shohei Ohtani & Freddie Freeman Hit Home Runs In Dodgers’ Walk-Off Loss To Marlins

A pitching rematch between Tony Gonsolin and Cal Quantrill this time went in favor of the Miami Marlins as they defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers, 5-4 in 10 innings, despite power hitting from Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman.

Freeman continued his torrid hitting not just this season but for his career against the Marlins, with an RBI single in the first inning.

He didn’t receive much help from a Dodgers lineup that is now without Teoscar Hernández in addition to Tommy Edman, and that kept pressure on Gonsolin.

He was aided by Andy Pages making a terrific leaping catch in right field to rob Liam Hicks of a go-ahead home run. Pages punctuated the play by firing a 98.5 mph strike to first base for an inning-ending double play. Pages’ throw is the hardest by a non-pitcher this season.

That came one night after Shohei Ohtani registered the hardest-hit home run this season with a 117.9 mph exit velocity. Ohtani was 0-for-2 with two strikeouts against Quantrill, but then ambushed the first pitch he saw from Anthony Veneziano for a game-tying home run to lead off the sixth inning.

Ohtani’s blast reached the upper deck in right field and made him the first player this season with 10 home runs and 10 stolen bases. Two batters later, Freeman’s solo blast to center field put the Dodgers back ahead.

That gave Freeman the most home runs ever hit by a single player against the Marlins franchise with 42. He entered the night tied with Ryan Zimmerman and Ryan Howard.

Gonsolin’s night came to an end at two runs allowed over five innings.

After the Marlins took a lead against Luis García in the bottom of the sixth, the Dodgers responded behind Ohtani’s game-tying RBI double in the seventh.

Anthony Banda induced a double play to strand the bases loaded in the eighth inning, and Tanner Scott sent the game to extras, but J.P. Feyereisen couldn’t extend the game beyond the 10th as he failed to retire any of the three batters faced.

Dodgers bullpen game

Next for the Dodgers is a bullpen game on Wednesday in which Landon Knack is going to factor into. The Dodgers will need to make a roster move in order to recall Knack from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

He’s either going to make a traditional start or follow an opener and pitch bulk innings.

The Dodgers are looking to come away from loanDepot Park with a series win.
