The Los Angeles Dodgers avoided a sweep against the Pittsburgh Pirates as their offense came to life and broke out in a 11-7 victory.
Mookie Betts and Shohei Ohtani started them off with a pair of singles, and Freddie Freeman gave the Dodgers an early 3-0 lead with a home run. It was a much-needed start for the big-three as they have struggled to get into a rhythm at the same time, which has led to the Dodgers’ offensive issues.
After a double from Teoscar Hernández, Miguel Rojas drove him in with a single to cap off a four-run first inning.
The Pirates worked their way back to tie the game at four, but Teoscar Hernández gave them the lead once again with a solo home run to open the fifth inning, and they never looked back.
Andy Pages was hit by a pitch and Rojas singled before Kiké Hernández doubled home another run. A throwing error led to the Dodgers scoring their seventh run, and then Betts homered to make it a 10-4 game.
The Dodgers added another run in the sixth inning when Teoscar Hernández singled and Andy Pages walked, which was followed by a double from Rojas to make it 11-4.
The Dodgers had some defensive issues, totaling three in the game, all throwing errors, with two of them being committed by Betts and one by Kiké Hernández. Betts struggles at shortstop have continued, despite Dodgers manager Dave Roberts saying he believes Betts has improved at the position.
Walker Buehler’s struggles continue
Walker Buehler made the start and once again failed to find positive results. He threw three innings while allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
Buehler has said he feels good physically after returning from a second Tommy John surgery, but the results have not backed that up. He now holds a 4.82 ERA and 1.46 WHIP through 28 innings over six starts.
Evan Phillips allowed the other three runs when he gave up a homer to Oneil Cruz in the bottom of the eighth, working in a non-save situation.
