Recap: Dodgers Let Yu Darvish Off Hook In Extra-Innings Loss To Padres

The Los Angeles Dodgers squandered an early opportunity against Yu Darvish and it proved costly in a 3-2 loss to the San Diego Padres in the 10th inning. The defeat snapped the Dodgers’ winning streak against the Padres at 10 games.

Yu Darvish needed 51 pitches to get through the first two innings and appeared to be on the ropes when the Dodgers loaded the bases, but he escaped the jam and went on to retire 13 batters in a row to finish his outing.

After Gavin Lux walked to load the bases with two outs, Darvish froze Mookie Betts for a strikeout that ended the second inning.

The Padres going to their bullpen didn’t amount to immediate change for the Dodgers, as Steven Wilson retired the side in order in the seventh inning. However, L.A. found some traction against Luis García in the eighth.

Chris Taylor snapped the string of consecutive batters retired with an infield single, which Gavin Lux followed by lining a base hit into center field. A wild pitch allowed Taylor to advance to third base, and after Betts and Freddie Freeman both struck out, Trea Turner saved the Dodgers by delivering a game-tying two-run double.

Baserunning has been a strong suit for L.A. this season, but Taylor was thrown out in the 10th inning when he attempted to tag and take third base on a fly ball to left field.

The Padres succeeded in playing small ball by pushing across the winning run on a sacrifice bunt and fly ball to left field.

Anderson gives Dodgers lift

Making his first start with the team and in place of the injured Andrew Heaney, Tyler Anderson allowed just two runs over 4.2 innings pitched. He exited with two runners on, which Phil Bickford stranded by striking out Manny Machado.

Jake Cronenworth was a thorn in Anderson’s side despite entering the night mired in an 0-for-25 skid. Croneworth snapped his drought with an infield single and later added a solo home run.
