The Los Angeles Dodgers found some success against World Series hero Walker Buehler, but the Boston Red Sox rallied for a 4-3 win to take the series rubber match at Fenway Park. First pitch was pushed back 40 minutes due to a rain delay.
Buehler allowed three runs over just 4.2 innings as he was done in by a high pitch count. Buehler also walked five batters, his second-most in a start this season.
The Red Sox staked Buehler a 1-0 lead after the first inning and they remained ahead until the third. A one-out walk to Miguel Rojas created an opening for the Dodgers, and Shohei Ohtani kept the inning alive with a single. Teoscar Hernández’s walk loaded the bases and Freddie Freeman drew one as well to bring in the game-tying run.
Michael Conforto’s leadoff home run in the fourth inning put the Dodgers ahead and Rojas’ second walk of the game led to them extending it. Rojas easily stole second base, and Mookie Betts took advantage by lining a two-out RBI single into center field.
But just as it seemed Dustin May had settled into the game, he ran into trouble in the fifth inning. May at one point retired nine batters in a row, with the stretch including five strikeouts.
A leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth and misplay by Conforto on a fly ball that hit off the Green Monster resulted in an RBI triple for Roman Anthony. Alex Bregman then gave Boston a 4-3 lead with his two-run home run to left field.
The Dodgers had an opportunity to pull even in the sixth inning but stranded Rojas after his leadoff double.
In the seventh inning, Conforto doubled and Tommy Edman was hit by a pitch to put the go-ahead run on with two outs. Will Smith flied out in the first pitch he saw as a pinch-hitter for Dalton Rushing.
Aroldis Chapman began the eighth inning by walking Rojas and Betts, then retired Shohei Ohtani but came out of the game due to an apparent injury. Jordan Hicks took over and was aided by Ceddanne Rafaela making a terrific unassisted double play on Teoscar Hernández’s line drive.
The tying run was left in scoring position in the ninth inning.
Dodgers’ struggles since All-Star break
The Dodgers have now lost two of their three series since the All-Star break, and overall are just 3-6 during that span.
Their road trip continues with a matchup against the Cincinnati Reds, who are fresh off sweeping the Tampa Bay Rays and have won 10 of their last 14 games.
