Recap: Dodgers Fall Into Tie With Giants After Loss To Reds

The Los Angeles Dodgers had continued struggles at the plate and suffered a 5-3 loss to the Cincinnati Reds in 10 innings. The loss dropped the Dodgers into a tie with the San Francisco Giants atop the National League West standings.

The Dodgers appeared primed to take an early lead as they loaded the bases with one out in the first inning. It encouragingly included Mookie Betts leading off with a double down the left-field line, which was a welcomed sight considering he’s missed pitches in the zone of late.

However, with a chance to strike first, Will Smith grounded into an inning-ending double play. Gavin Lux wound up producing the Dodgers’ only run off Tyler Mahle with a two-out RBI base hit in the fourth inning.

By then L.A. had fallen into a deficit despite Julio Urias initially looking every bit as dominant as his career start against the Seattle Mariners. Following a walk a to open the game, he retired the next nine batters faced.

Urias’ no-hitter was broken up by Jesse Winker’s leadoff single in the fourth inning that got the Reds going. Nick Castellanos followed with a double and Eugenio Suarez’s RBI groundout gave Cincinnati a lead. Nick Senzel’s sacrifice fly brought in a second run before Urias could get through the ining.

Castellanos delivered again for the Reds with a two-out single in the fifth that negated the run Lux had driven in the inning prior.

Fresh off being recalled from the alternate training site, Mitch White made his 2021 debut and contributed 1.2 innings. Brusdar Graterol got the third out in the seventh to strand both inherited runners.

The Dodgers bullpen held up one night after collapsing against the San Diego Padres, which the offense rewarded them for.

With a runner on and two outs in the bottom of the seventh, the Reds called on Amir Garrett to face Corey Seager. The left-on-left matchup went in favor of Seager, who lifted a slider that was down and in out to center field for a game-tying home run.

But L.A. then went quiet and lost the game on Winker’s leadoff home run in the 10th inning against Kenley Jansen. The Reds snapped a seven-game losing streak with their win.
