Recap: Dodgers Defense Lets Tony Gonsolin Down In Loss To Brewers

The Los Angeles Dodgers endured a late night of travel and couldn’t quite get themselves off the mat in a 9-3 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers that snapped their modest two-game winning streak. Conversely, the Brewers have now won two games in a row since enduring a six-game losing streak.

While the Dodgers offense was struggling to generate much traction, Tony Gonsolin largely cruised through four scoreless innings. He was particularly efficient early, needing just 16 pitches to get through the first two frames.

Milwaukee didn’t have a baserunner until Tyrone Taylor’s single with one out in the third. Gonsolin otherwise struck out three batters to get through the inning.

Unfortunately for Gonsolin, shaky Dodgers infield defense reared its head in the fifth inning. Michael Busch gave an earnest effort on a grounder to his left, cutting off Miguel Rojas but failing to make the play.

After a strikeout, Brice Turang’s speed allowed him to avoid an inning-ending double play. The Dodgers only managing a force out cost them as Taylor hit his second single and Joey Wiemer followed with a three-run home run.

The three unearned runs were all Gonsolin allowed over six innings. He finished with six strikeouts and didn’t walk a batter in his best start since coming off the 15-day injured list.

Wiemer added onto the Brewers’ lead with an RBI double against Phil Bickford in the seventh inning, and Christian Yelich added a two-run base hit. Willy Adames broke the game open with a three-run homer off Wander Suero, who has walked four of 10 batters faced in his two appearances with the Dodgers.

Bickford’s trouble began on an infield single that Busch was unable to turn into an out due to overrunning the ball to his right and cleat getting caught in the dirt.

The Dodgers’ first bit of scoring came when Freddie Freeman led off the seventh inning with a ground-rule double that was followed by groundouts from Jason Heyward and Max Muncy.

Chris Taylor then added onto his hot stretch with a two-run home run in the ninth inning.

Dodgers shorthanded

Although the Dodgers didn’t yet put Caleb Ferguson on the paternity list, he was not with the team in Milwaukee as his wife is due to give birth to the couple’s first child at any moment.

Evan Phillips also was unavailable due to pitching in the each of the past two games.
