Recap: Dodgers Defeat Rockies To Win Series At Coors Field

The Los Angeles Dodgers scored without a hit and Julio Urias made the early lead hold in a 4-2 win over the Colorado Rockies. With that, the Dodgers opened the season by taking their first series and now are on a three-game winning streak.

Austin Gomber, acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals in the Nolan Arenado trade, managed to pitch just three innings in his Rockies debut. Gomber walked Mookie Betts to open the game, then threw into center field after fielding a comebacker.

Justin Turner extended his on-base streak to 34 games with a walk that loaded the bases, and the Dodgers then took a 1-0 lead on a wild pitch. Gomber walked Max Muncy and Chris Taylor, bringing in another run. Gavin Lux’s sacrifice fly extended the Dodgers’ lead to 3-0.

Their first hit was Zach McKinstry’s leadoff double in the second inning. McKinstry to that point sat at 3-for-3 this season with two doubles and a home run (inside the park).

Gomber walked Betts later in the inning, but he was caught stealing. Turner and Taylor drew free passes in the third inning, but both were stranded. Although Gomber only pitched three innings and struggled to command pitches, he was responsible for the Rockies’ lone hit off Urias for most of the afternoon.

Chris Owings doubled with one out in the bottom of the sixth, which was followed by a Garrett Hampson walk, but Urias stranded both runners. He wound up getting through seven-plus innings for the longest outing of his career.

Urias was still in the game to begin the bottom of the eighth, though came out after Ryan McMahon’s leadoff infield single. Jimmy Nelson retired the first two batters faced but then issued a walk and gave up a two-run double before getting through the eighth inning.

With Victor Gonzalez and Kenley Jansen unavailable, Corey Knebel converted the save.

Urias dominant with changeup

Urias was effective by all counts, but especially so with his changeup. The Rockies went 0-for-11 and struck out four times on the pitch.
